Exterior Overcoat vs. Full Blast--Aurora, IN

When it comes to deciding between a full blast and overcoat on the exterior of tanks, a few variables must be considered. Overcoating is always the least expensive route and can provide a considerablly beneficial extension to the exterior coating system's service life. But when choosing the option of overcoating, the following situations must be assessed and discussed:
  • Is the Existing coating system adhering well enough to withstand overcoating?
  • How many mils of paint are already there? How many coats of paint?
  • What kind of surface preparation should be used?
  • What kind of new paint should be applied?

An adhesion test should be performed before deciding if an overcoat is feasible. Secondly, a dry film thickness reading should be measured as well. High pressure power washing with a cleaning/mildewcide/fungicide should be performed. In addition, hand and/or power tool cleaning of spotted areas along with a spot primer are typically performed. Acrylics are a good generic coating type to use when it comes to good performance properties associated with overcoating a tank or structure. Induron Aquanaut is product that has been very successfully used on many tanks and metal structures across the country.

The picture shown above is of two tanks located near Aurora, IN where an Induron surface tolerant spot primer (Induramastic 85) & 2 coats of Induron Acrylic (Induron Aquanaut) were applied. The tanks look terrific. Please call or email for more specific advice if you have a specific tank that you're considering to have painted. Some tanks are NOT good candidates to overcoat, so have someone come to look at your tank.
